How to lose an ad pitch

Courtesy: AZ Quotes

We just lost a pitch for a big ad. It was for an insurance company. They had a song made which they wanted to release with a video. 3 rounds of meetings, 10 complete ideas later, we didn’t get the project.

This is maybe just a rant. It is heartbreaking that we lost the pitch. I spent days and night thinking about it. The song is sung by my favoritest artist, Sonu Nigam, who I rever so much. I daydreamt all day when we were asked to pitch ideas. Today is his birthday. The day we lost the pitch was my birthday. Yeah, life’s a little difficult sometimes but you need it to stop feeling like God.

What does it tell you about this world of insane money and glamour? Its brutal. It has no fixed parameter to judge people on. Everything is subjective. It’s not like you’ve made 100 ads so we’ll give you this project too. You take a re-birth with every new idea, hoping for them to believe in your child as much as you do.

Unfortunately, most of the time they don’t. What do you learn from this? You learn that success is the tiniest bit of atom in this world of failure. You cannot succeed everyday. At most, people completely succeed 10 times in their life and that is what ends up defining them.

Can you aim for those 10 successes? No. You cannot. They cannot be planned. All you can do is reduce the gap of time between your failure and success. And that is what I enjoy the most; closest to giving birth to a life is creating an idea, a formula, a machine, a film, a poem, a song. Keep creating because there is no population index for ideas in this world.

It is indeed about the process more than the results. If you are part of more processes than results, you’ll soon be unaffected by the results.
